Overview

Stephen regularly acts for Chief Constables at inquests around the country and is particularly well known as a firm but sensitive advocate who understands the issues faced by police officers and Chief Constables at inquests. He is a specialist police law practitioner who has been acting for and advising police forces around the country for twenty years.

Stephen acted for the West Midlands Police at the inquest into the death in custody of Lee Mayne.

Described as “very knowledgeable, thorough, robust and effective” in the Legal 500, Stephen has a wide experience of representing Chief Constables and individual officers at inquests. He has acted in cases involving deaths in custody, deaths following restraint, positional asphyxia, excited deliriums and road traffic collisions.

He acted for the Essex Police at the inquest into the death of Peter Kirkwood, who took his own life in prison following an extended period of police detention; and the West Midlands Police at the inquest into the death in custody of Lee Mayne, who died following alcohol withdrawal.
