Robert Francis QC appointed President of The Patients Association

The Patients Association has announced that Robert Francis QC, who led the public inquiry into poor care at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, is to become its President. He will assume the post, which has been intentionally vacant since the death of former President Claire Rayner, immediately. Speaking about the news, Katherine Murphy, Patients Association Chief Executive, said: “We are the only organisation that has been consistent in our arguments that the recommendations made by the Francis Inquiry should be implemented in full. We are therefore honoured that Mr Francis has agreed to take up the position of President. The Francis Inquiry set out a clear blueprint for an NHS which treats patients in a safe, dignified and caring way. We look forward to working with him to ensure that the NHS, and the Government, is not allowed to lose sight of the desperate need to reform the system. “Robert said “The Patients Association have been ardent campaigners for the safety and wellbeing of patients for decades, and as core participants they ensured that the patient voice was well represented throughout the Inquiry. As President I will support the organisation as they continue to carry out their invaluable work.”
The position is an honorary one and Robert will continue in full time practice from chambers.
