Overview

Joanne is an experienced junior barrister practising in fraud, serious crime, inquests, police law, and professional regulation. Joanne has acted in multi-million pound fraud investigations and in high value cases.

 

 

Joanne was awarded a Pegasus Scholarship in 2019. Through her placement with the American Inns of Court, she developed her knowledge of the US legal system and legislative procedure.

Joanne was the Chair of the Young Barristers’ Committee of the Bar Council of England and Wales in 2021.

Expertise

Prior to her career at the Bar, Joanne studied law at Newnham College, Cambridge.

Regulatory and Disciplinary Proceedings

Joanne has appeared in a number of police disciplinary hearings which have involved serious allegations engaging multiple standards of professional behaviour. Joanne has also been instructed in disciplinary proceedings by a regulator in the legal sector.

Joanne completed a secondment in the legal department of a large regulatory body. During this time, she worked on cases involving allegations of illegal practice, disciplinary proceedings, and registration appeals. Following this experience, Joanne was seconded to a large law firm which was instructed to act on behalf of a number of regulators. Joanne was involved in a number of cases arising from wide-ranging misconduct allegations and she represented regulators at misconduct hearings and in the High Court.

Inquests

Joanne regularly appears in inquest hearings. She has acted on behalf of a number of agencies and accepts instructions from all interested persons. She has acted in Article 2 inquests and jury inquests. Her experience includes inquests involving deaths in prison, deaths following detention, and allegations of failures by state bodies.

Business & Financial Crime

Joanne accepts instructions in fraud and financial crime cases. High profile cases include:

  • Operation C & Operation L (R v Z & others) (Chester CC, 2020): Instructed as a led junior in a multi-handed trial involving allegations of conspiracy to defraud.
  • Operation E (R v C & others) (Wood Green CC, 2019): Acted as a led junior in a six month multi-handed trial representing a company director charged with multiple counts of fraud.

Joanne provides advice and representation in relation to asset forfeiture proceedings and account freezing orders.

Joanne acted as a led junior on behalf of a high net worth individual pursuing judicial review arising from failure to initiate extradition proceedings against a background of fraud allegations.

Serious & SPECIALIST CRIME

Joanne has provided representation in cases involving allegations of serious crime. She has been instructed as a junior in a number of murder trials, including:

  • R v W & others (Derby CC, 2020): Led by King’s Counsel in a multi-handed murder trial.
  • R v B & others (Derby CC, 2019): Led by King’s Counsel in a multi-handed murder trial in which client was acquitted following a successful Galbraith submission at the close of the Prosecution’s case.
  • R v C & others (Sheffield CC, 2018): Led by King’s Counsel in a multi-handed murder trial representing the first defendant in a case involving multiple disclosure issues.

Joanne can provide advice and representation on matters arising from criminal proceedings, including civil orders.

Health and Safety and Environmental Law

Joanne has acted on behalf of companies and directors accused of multiple breaches of health and safety regulations. She has previously represented a company in proceedings arising from environmental harm. Joanne can provide advice and representation to companies and individuals facing alleged breaches of environmental law and health and safety regulations.

Appointments and Memberships

In 2021, Joanne was the Chair of the Young Barristers’ Committee of the Bar Council of England and Wales (YBC). In this role, Joanne represented the interests of all barristers in their first seven years in practice. Joanne worked on a number of key issues for the Bar, including legislative reform, coronavirus recovery and remuneration.

In 2022, Joanne was awarded permanent membership of the Vassar B. Carlton American Inn of Court (Florida, USA) in recognition of her work with the Inn’s education programme.

Joanne recently completed her term as an elected member of the Bar Council (2019-2023).

Joanne contributes to the work of Lincoln’s Inn’s Education and Training Department by training and mentoring law students and young members of the profession. In addition, she is an advocacy trainer for Lincoln’s Inn.

Joanne is a member of the Female Fraud Forum (FFF) and the Association of Regulatory & Disciplinary Lawyers (ARDL).

Publications

Joanne has written articles for Counsel magazine. She wrote a youth justice paper within “The Justice Papers” series which received national media coverage. She is a contributing author to Lexis PSL’s corporate crime resources.

Joanne contributed to a number of articles, webinars and podcasts as Chair of the Young Barristers’ Committee on various topics including the impact of coronavirus on the justice system and the challenges facing young practitioners.
